Does a Nevada truck need a USDOT number for in-state work?

The sources conflict. FMCSA lists Nevada among the states that require in-state carriers to have a USDOT number, but the Nevada DOT says the state does not require DOT numbers to operate within it. Ask the Nevada Highway Patrol or the Nevada Transportation Authority before assuming either.

Checked against Nevada’s official sources in September 2026.

The rule in Nevada

Who it covers: Intrastate common, contract and private carriers (Nevada's amended definition of 'motor carrier') operating vehicles at or above the intrastate line. Also any vehicle of a carrier under Nevada Transportation Authority jurisdiction, whatever its weight.

The weight line: For intrastate enforcement by the Department of Public Safety (Nevada Highway Patrol), a commercial motor vehicle is one at 26,001 lb or more, or a passenger or hazmat vehicle. This is the safety-rule line, not a confirmed USDOT line. Vehicles of carriers under Nevada Transportation Authority jurisdiction (intrastate for-hire such as movers and tow operators) are covered at any weight for listed parts, including Part 390.

“Apart from federal regulations, some states require their intrastate commercial motor vehicle registrants to obtain a USDOT Number. These states include: ... Nevada ...” source
“2. Intrastate commerce to transport passengers or property if the vehicle: (a) Is one described in paragraph (a), (b) or (c) of subsection 1; or (b) Has a gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight rating, gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight of 26,001 or more pounds, whichever is greater.” source

The rule: NAC 706.2472 (DPS adoption of federal motor carrier safety regulations; intrastate CMV definition); NAC 706.2473 (Nevada Transportation Authority adoption)

Who to ask: Nevada Department of Public Safety, Nevada Highway Patrol Commercial Enforcement (safety rules); Nevada Transportation Authority (intrastate for-hire carriers and household goods movers); Nevada DMV Motor Carrier (IRP/IFTA)

Safety rules for in-state trucks

The Department of Public Safety adopts 49 CFR parts 40, 382, 383, 385, 387, 390-393, 395, 396 and 397 (and § 386.72) by reference, with an intrastate CMV definition of 26,001 lb. The Nevada Transportation Authority and DMV have parallel adoptions (NAC 706.2473 and 706.2471). (NAC 706.2472)

  • The federal minimum age of 21 (49 CFR 391.11(b)(1)) applies only to interstate drivers, intrastate passenger drivers and hazmat drivers. It does not apply to intrastate property drivers.
  • Vehicles of carriers regulated by the Nevada Transportation Authority are covered at any weight, but only by the listed parts.

The federal lines, which apply in Nevada too

  • 10,001 lb and interstate commerce: a USDOT number, a medical card, a driver qualification file, the hours-of-service rules and daily inspections (49 CFR 390.5).
  • 26,001 lb: a CDL, for a single vehicle or a combination towing more than 10,000 lb (383.5). The CDL rules cover in-state driving as well (383.3), and drug and alcohol testing follows the CDL (382.103).

What we could not confirm

  • The sources conflict. FMCSA lists Nevada as a state that requires in-state carriers to have a USDOT number; the Nevada DOT help center says 'The state of Nevada does not require DOT numbers in order to operate within the state', which may only mean Nevada issues no number of its own. We found no Nevada statute or rule that requires one in words.
  • Whether the Nevada Transportation Authority requires a USDOT number for its licences (movers, tow operators and other in-state for-hire carriers) was not confirmed.
