Does a Washington truck need a USDOT number for in-state work?
Yes, but Washington's agencies give different weight lines. The Department of Licensing says a USDOT number is needed from 10,001 lb GVWR; the statute's definition for DOT-number purposes (RCW 46.16A.010) uses 26,001 lb; and the Utilities and Transportation Commission requires one from 16,001 lb for its common carriers, and at any weight for household-goods and solid-waste carriers. The lowest line that applies to you is the safe one.

The rule in Washington
Who it covers: All motor carriers with a commercial motor vehicle operating in Washington, intrastate or interstate, for-hire or private; UTC-regulated carriers (household goods, solid waste, buses) regardless of weight.
The weight line: Washington DOL says in-state commercial vehicles need a USDOT number from 10,001 lb GVWR. The statute's own definition of a commercial motor vehicle 'for the purposes of requiring a department of transportation number' uses 26,001 lb, and the UTC says its common carriers need one from 16,001 lb GVW, while UTC-regulated household goods and solid waste carriers need one at any weight.
Exemptions the state lists:
- Farm vehicles hauling the farmer's own products or supplies must have a DOT number but are exempt from safety audits and compliance reviews (RCW 46.32.080(2))
- Intrastate vehicles rated 10,001-26,000 lb without placarded hazmat are exempt from federal driver testing and medical rules (49 CFR 391 subparts D and E) (WAC 446-65-010)

Safety rules for in-state trucks
The State Patrol adopts 49 CFR Parts 40, 325, 350, 355, 365-397 in their entirety (as they existed April 25, 2025) for intrastate and interstate motor carriers, with Washington modifications. (WAC 446-65-010)
- Intrastate drivers of 10,001-26,000 lb vehicles without placarded hazmat skip the federal road-test and medical-exam rules, and may be 18-20.
- Intrastate dump-truck and log-haul drivers get modified hours of service within 100 air miles (e.g. up to 12 hours driving after 10 off).
- The UTC says state law requires a USDOT number for intrastate operations even when FMCSA's tool says otherwise.
The federal lines, which apply in Washington too
- 10,001 lb and interstate commerce: a USDOT number, a medical card, a driver qualification file, the hours-of-service rules and daily inspections (49 CFR 390.5).
- 26,001 lb: a CDL, for a single vehicle or a combination towing more than 10,000 lb (383.5). The CDL rules cover in-state driving as well (383.3), and drug and alcohol testing follows the CDL (382.103).

Questions
Does Washington require a USDOT number for intrastate trucks?
Yes, but Washington's agencies give different weight lines. The Department of Licensing says a USDOT number is needed from 10,001 lb GVWR; the statute's definition for DOT-number purposes (RCW 46.16A.010) uses 26,001 lb; and the Utilities and Transportation Commission requires one from 16,001 lb for its common carriers, and at any weight for household-goods and solid-waste carriers. The lowest line that applies to you is the safe one.
What is the CDL weight in Washington?
The same as everywhere: 26,001 lb for a single vehicle, or a combination of 26,001 lb towing more than 10,000 lb. The federal CDL rules apply to in-state driving too (49 CFR 383.3), and drug and alcohol testing follows the CDL (382.103).
Who administers the rule in Washington?
Washington State Patrol, Commercial Vehicle Division (USDOT numbers and safety); Department of Licensing (registration); Utilities and Transportation Commission (household goods, solid waste, common carriers).
What we could not confirm
- The State Patrol's own USDOT page was not found. The 10,001-lb line most likely follows its adoption of the federal registration rules for in-state carriers, which was not confirmed.
